The Library of Congress has a hawk!

In case you haven't heard bits of this fantastic story, you can find the full tale here on the Library of Congress blog.  The main reading room of the Library does, indeed, have a young female Cooper's Hawk living there for the time being!  The pictures here are from the blog linked above, and there are raptor specialists working on safely capturing her for any care she might need and wild release.  I like to think maybe she's just a young lady excited about our government and wanting to learn a bit more.  And oh how I wish I were a hawk...

Leslie Science and Nature Center

This past weekend I decided to check out a place near Prune Ridge that I have known about for some time, but never visited or really learned what they do there.  The Leslie Science and Nature Center is less than 3 miles from our house.  I hope to spend more time there and learn a lot more while I do, but in the meantime...  How is it possible that this place exists so close to our home and I've not enjoyed it before now?!?  The first picture is of the Black Pond along the Black Pond Trail at LSNC.  Please note the frog trying to hide in the second picture, taken from the foot bridge over the pond.  These pictures were taken with my cell phone:

Hawk Sighting

John and I were "joined" for dinner this evening - by a hawk!  Not inside Prune Ridge, of course, but there was a hawk perched for a good 10 minutes on the chimney of a building adjacent to ours.  I believe it was a Cooper's Hawk.  Cool!!
